Your feedback on the Initial Designs and next steps

What did you tell us about the Initial Designs?

Since we closed the consultation on the Initial Designs for Ashgrove Connects, we have been busy analysing all your feedback, using this to refine the design and seeking approval to progress the project to the next stage.

This news post will update you on the feedback we received and outline the next steps for the project.

Initial Designs

Thank you to everyone who took the time to view, engage in discussions and respond to the Initial Designs. We presented these as ideas, responding to local priorities identified during the first stage of the project, to understand what you liked and what you would change or combine before developing this further.

What you told us

We have now analysed all the feedback we received through surveys and activities held during June and July. You can read about the findings here.

The feedback we received from the community and stakeholders on the Initial Designs has helped to develop a Concept Design for the project. As part of the next stage of the project, this Concept Design will be developed further.

Next steps

Following completion of Stages 1 and 2, the project was recently presented at Aberdeen City Council’s City Growth and Resources Committee. At the Committee meeting, the project was approved to proceed to the next stage of development. You can read more about this here.

Following approval, an application will now be made for further funding to develop the project in more detail. This will include further opportunities for the community and stakeholders to view and feedback on the design as it develops in more detail.

Until funding has been secured for the next stages, there will be minimal progress made on the project. Further updates will continue to be communicated through this website once funding has been secured for the next stages. Please make sure to sign up to receive latest news on the top right of this page.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in the project so far. Your involvement has been vital to the progress made and we look forward to the developing the project further once funding has been secured.

Exploring the designs

Drop in events

Thanks to everyone who took the time to come along to the drop-in events this week at Cairncry Community Centre and Westburn Outdoor Centre to explore the initial designs. It was great to see so many of you and be able to engage in more detail on the ideas for Ashgrove Road West, Ashgrove Road and Laurelwood Avenue.

Visit to Crosby House

We also visited the residents and staff of Crosby House Care Home to understand their connection to the local area, identify improvements and collect feedback on the design ideas.

Many of the residents we met have lived in the area for many years and were able to reflect on how the streets have changed over this time.

They told us how the speed of traffic, high kerbs and no resting places can create a barrier to moving around and being able to enjoy the local area. More crossings, lower vehicle speeds, separate space for people walking and cycling, improved access to greenspace, seating and a splash of colour are some of the ideas the residents liked.

Thanks to everyone at Crosby House for helping to organise the visit.

Did you miss the events? There is still time to feedback.

You can continue to view and feedback on the initial designs on the website by clicking this link or by visiting the public display at Cornhill Library - paper copies of the survey are available at the library for anyone who is not able to complete this online.

You can also here from Rene, our Urban Design Lead, talking about the initial designs at the webinar we held last week by clicking on this link .

Its’ important we receive your feedback by Sunday 17th July to enable us to steer the development of a concept design for the area so please do use this opportunity to tell us what you think.

If you or anyone you know would like support to feedback, please do let us know. Thanks again for all your participation so far.

Developing designs with Cornhill Primary School

We were delighted to spend Wednesday morning with P6 pupils of Cornhill Primary School to present, develop and collect their feedback on the initial designs for Ashgrove Connects.

    What did pupils tell us?

During March, the pupils took us on a walk of the streets surrounding the primary school. On the walk, pupils told us they felt proud to be part of the neighbourhood and really enjoyed spending time in the local parks. They also told us that Ashgrove Road West is very busy and cars travel too fast which means they struggle to cross the road. They suggested we slow down vehicles, provide more crossings, provide a safe space for people walking and cycling, add more greenery and opportunities for play.

    Understanding the design ideas

The first activity asked pupils to discuss the key design features for Ashgrove Connects which you can read about here . The pupils were then asked to identify these features on the layout plans for Ashgrove Road West. The pupils were extremely knowledgeable, particularly around climate change, accessibility and safety.

    Developing the design ideas

The second activity asked pupils to develop the design ideas for Ashgrove Road West and Cornhill using a model of the street. Once the model was pulled together, pupils could discuss the benefits and consider the journeys of different street users.

Ideas for the street included planting low level bushes on grass verges to protect people walking and cycling from the road and making further improvments to crossings. Ideas for the pocket park/small greenspace area included adding picnic benches, wooden blocks (play features), art and bins.

Pupils suggested trialling some of the ideas to collect feedback from the wider community and recognised the need for community involvement in the design of public spaces to create a sense of ownership and local pride.

Thanks to the pupils and staff of Cornhill Primary School for continuing to be involved in Ashgrove Connects.

    Feedback on the initial designs

You can continue to view and feedback on the initial designs for Ashgrove Connects online here or at the public display at Cornhill Library. You can also sign up to join the webinar taking place on Tuesday here .

Tell us what you think of the initial designs for Ashgrove Connects

Welcome to the Design Stage of Ashgrove Connects where you can view and feedback on the initial designs which have been developed from what you told us is important to you.

Idea for Ashgrove Road West at the junction with Cornhill Terrace

    Initial Designs

To present the initial designs, we have split the study area into two: Ashgrove Road West, and Ashgrove Road and Laurelwood Avenue. We have done this to ensure we respond to the different characteristics of each area. Within each area we have focussed in on key sections of the design to provide more detail.

In some sections we have developed two or three Ideas to show what could be possible. Elements of each design can be incorporated into different sections depending on the feedback from the community.

We are asking you to consider the different design ideas and feedback on what you like and what you would change, combine or improve. The feedback we receive will help to steer the development of a concept design for the study area.

    How you can get involved

You can view and feedback on the initial design through the following activities:

  • Visit the project website by clicking on this link.
  • Visit the public display in Cornhill Library from Wednesday 22nd June. Opening hours: Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Saturday 10-1pm and Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday 2-5pm.
  • Join the live webinar on Tuesday 28th June between 7-8pm to find out more. Please sign up in advance to join the webinar here . Once registered, you will receive an email confirmation. If you do not receive this or need support to register, please email emily.davie@atkinsglobal.com.
  • Drop-in to Cairncry Community Centre , anytime between 10-1pm or Westburn Outdoor Centre , anytime between 4-7pm on Tuesday 5th July to meet the team. Refreshments will be provided.
  • Please feedback before Sunday 17th July. Your feedback is vital to ensure we understand your priorities. If you or your neighbours need support to view or feedback on the initial designs, please contact us.

What have we been up to this week?

Thanks to local residents, Cornhill Primary School and representatives from the University of Aberdeen for taking part in more walking audits this week.

On Monday and Tuesday, we were joined by a group of residents from Ashgrove Road and Ashgrove Road West to explore the street environment in situ. We even managed to incorporate some litter picking along the way!

On Wednesday morning, we were joined by a brilliant group of Primary 6 pupils from Cornhill Primary School . After a quick hands up survey to understand how pupils travel to school and explore how streets can change, the pupils went on a walk surrounding Cornhill Primary School to help us discover more about their local area. The emoji faces provided a popular way of demonstrating how they felt! Finally, we enjoyed a group discussion and a quick tour of the local playground.

We also met with staff and student representation from the University of Aberdeen on Wednesday to conduct our final walking audit. This provided an excellent insight into how students travel and access the campus.

A big thank you to everyone who got involved in the walking audits. If you have any feedback on the sessions, please do get in touch with Emily.
